How Much Does a Music Video Cost in the UK? A Straightforward Breakdown
If you search online for music video costs, you get answers like “anywhere from £500 to £500,000.” That is technically true and completely useless. This post gives you real numbers based on what we actually charge and what we see in the UK market.
We produce music videos in Luton, Bedfordshire and across the UK. We work with independent artists, unsigned acts, and labels. The pricing landscape has changed a lot over the past few years, partly because camera technology has improved and partly because more artists now understand the value of video for social media alongside traditional platforms.
The honest answer: it depends on three things
Before the numbers, it helps to understand what actually drives the cost of a music video. There are three main factors:
- Crew size. A solo videographer costs less than a director plus camera operator plus assistant plus lighting tech. Bigger crew means more control on set but significantly higher day rates.
- Locations. Shooting in one location for a day costs a lot less than moving between three locations, hiring a private venue, or getting permits for public spaces. Location hire alone can add hundreds or thousands to a budget.
- Post-production. A straight cut with colour grade is much cheaper than a video with visual effects, motion graphics, or complex compositing. The edit often costs as much as the shoot day, sometimes more.
Budget levels: what you actually get
Under £500
At this level you are looking at one person with a camera, usually shooting on a single location over a few hours. The edit will be straightforward. You can still get a good result if the concept is simple and the artist is comfortable on camera, but expect limitations in what is achievable. This is realistic for a social media vertical cut or a lyric video, not a narrative piece.
£500 to £1,500
This is the range where most independent artists in the UK start. A full shoot day with a videographer who knows what they are doing, one or two locations, and a proper edit with colour grading. You are not getting a huge crew or complex effects, but you can get something that looks professional and holds up on YouTube or as an Instagram reel.
At JSMotions this is where a lot of our music video work sits for independent artists based in Luton and Bedfordshire. A shoot day on location, clean cinematography, a full edit with audio sync and grade.
£1,500 to £5,000
At this level you are working with a proper production team. Director, camera operator, possibly a producer. Multiple locations. Potentially extras or cast. A more involved edit with effects if needed.
This is realistic for an artist with label support, or an independent act that has been building a following and wants to invest in something that can work as a proper release. The production values at this level are noticeably higher and the creative options open up significantly.
£5,000 and above
You are into full commercial production territory. Large crews, multiple shoot days, significant post-production, sometimes aerial footage, set builds, complex editing. This is where major label releases and high-profile independent artists operate. Most artists reading this will not be here yet, and that is fine.
What people often forget to budget for
A few things that catch people out when they are putting together a music video budget:
- Wardrobe and styling. Even a simple performance video benefits from thinking about what you wear on camera. Patterns, logos, and certain colours cause issues on screen. Budget some time and money for this.
- Location fees. If you want to shoot somewhere specific, like a warehouse, a studio, or a private venue, there is usually a hire cost. Sometimes it is £100 for a few hours, sometimes it is much more.
- Music licensing for samples. Not a video cost, but if your track contains a sample that is not cleared, the video can be blocked on YouTube. Sort this before production starts.
- Revisions beyond what is included. Most videographers include two rounds of edits. Changes beyond that are usually charged separately. Be clear about your feedback on the first viewing.
- Vertical cuts for social. If you want both a 16:9 YouTube version and a 9:16 version for TikTok and Reels, some videographers charge extra for the reformat. Ask upfront.
How to get more from a smaller budget
If you are working with a limited budget, the concept is where you get the most value back. A simple concept executed well beats a complicated idea executed poorly every time. Trying to do too much with too little money usually results in something that feels rushed.
One location, one strong visual idea, good lighting, and a clean edit will outperform a multi-location shoot that runs over time and ends up looking chaotic in the edit. Talk to your videographer about this before the shoot. A good one will tell you honestly what is achievable and what is not.
You can also save on post-production by coming in with clear references. The more specific you are about the look you want, the less time gets spent going back and forth in the edit. “Look at the colour grade in this video” is far more useful than “make it look cinematic.”
Does location affect the cost?
Yes, but maybe not as much as you think. A videographer based in London will typically charge London day rates, which are higher than Luton or Bedfordshire rates. But they may also charge travel to come to you if you are outside London.
Working with a local production company in Luton or Bedfordshire tends to be more cost effective for artists based in the area. No travel costs, easier logistics, and easier to arrange a reshoot or additional content further down the line.
Questions to ask before you book
- What is included in the quote? Shoot time, editing, revisions, delivery format. Get it in writing.
- Do you deliver a vertical cut for social media? And is it included or extra?
- What is the turnaround time? From shoot day to first edit, and from final approval to delivery.
- Can I see a full video you have made for a similar artist? Not a clip. A full video.
- What is the deposit and payment schedule? A deposit upfront and the balance on delivery is standard.
