Commercial Photography vs Video: Which Does Your Business Actually Need?

21 July 20267 min readBy JSMotions, Luton

A lot of businesses in Luton and Bedfordshire come to us knowing they need better visuals but not knowing which way to go. Photography or video? Both have a case. Here is how to think about it without overcomplicating it.

We do both at JSMotions, so we are not going to push you one way or the other. What we want is for you to spend your budget on what actually moves your business forward. Sometimes that is photography. Sometimes that is video. Often it is a bit of both, shot on the same day to keep costs down.

Where photography still wins

Photography is not old-fashioned. For a lot of applications, a great still image works better than video. Here is where photography is usually the right call:

Product listings and e-commerce

If you are selling a physical product online, clean product photography is essential. Customers are making a purchase decision based on what they see on screen. A well-lit, properly styled product image converts better than a video in most e-commerce contexts, because it lets customers quickly scan and compare.

That said, video works well as a supplement here. A short clip showing the product in use alongside the main product images can lift conversion rates, particularly on platforms like Amazon or your own site.

Real estate and property

Real estate photography in Luton and across Bedfordshire has changed a lot. The quality of listing photos now directly affects how many viewings a property gets. Estate agents who invest in proper photography consistently see more interest than those using phone snaps or low-quality shots.

We offer real estate photography across Luton, Bedfordshire and surrounding areas. Interiors, exteriors, gardens, and aerial drone shots where relevant. A properly lit interior photo makes a two-bedroom flat in Luton look as good as it actually is, rather than how most phone cameras make it look.

Property video tours are growing in use too, particularly for higher-value properties and new builds where developers want to show off a development before it is complete. If that applies to you, combining photography and a walkthrough video on the same shoot day is often the most cost-effective route.

Team and headshots

LinkedIn profiles, website about pages, press releases. A good headshot is one of the most used pieces of content a professional can have, and most people are walking around with something taken five years ago at a conference. Professional headshots for a whole team can be done in a morning shoot and make a real difference to how a business presents itself online.

Print and brand materials

Brochures, flyers, exhibition stands, signage. Photography is the foundation of most print material. You need high-resolution images that hold up at large sizes, and that requires a proper camera and a photographer who understands how images work in print versus on screen.

Where video wins

Video has become far more accessible in the past few years. A business in Luton that previously could not afford a brand video now can, because production costs have come down as the technology has improved. Here is where video tends to outperform photography:

Social media content

Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube. Every platform is prioritising video over static images in its algorithm right now. A business posting only photography to Instagram in 2026 is going to get less reach than one posting Reels or short video content. If social media is part of your marketing, you need video.

The good news is that a single well-planned shoot day can produce enough short-form content to post consistently for weeks. We regularly produce social content packages for Luton and Bedfordshire businesses that come away with 10 to 15 pieces of content from one day.

Explaining a product or service

If what you sell needs explaining, video is almost always better than photography. A SaaS platform, a complex service, a physical product that works in a specific way. Video lets you show and explain at the same time in a way that photography cannot.

Explainer videos and product demos can live on your homepage, your sales emails, and your social channels simultaneously. They tend to reduce the time your sales team spends on calls because prospects have already understood the core of what you do.

Events and corporate occasions

If you are running a conference, a product launch, an awards ceremony or a corporate event, video captures the atmosphere in a way photography cannot. A highlight reel of your event becomes marketing content for the next one. Testimonials and interviews captured on the day become sales content that lasts well beyond the event itself.

Brand storytelling

A brand film or company story video is one of the most versatile pieces of content a business can have. It can sit on your homepage, get sent to prospects, play at events, and run as a paid ad. Photography alone cannot tell a story the same way.

Shooting both on the same day

Here is something worth knowing if you are budget-conscious: you can often get photography and video content from the same shoot day, with one team. At JSMotions we regularly do this for clients in Luton and Bedfordshire. A shoot day that produces both a brand video and a set of professional photography costs significantly less than booking them separately.

The planning has to be slightly more detailed, because you are managing two outputs at once. But if you are going to the effort of arranging a location, getting the team together, and setting up lighting, it makes sense to get as much from that day as you can.

How to decide

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where will this content live? If it is on social media, lean towards video. If it is in print or on a website product page, lean towards photography.
  • Does your product or service need to be shown in use? If yes, video. If a still image communicates it clearly, photography is fine.
  • What do you already have? If your website has great photos but no video, start with video. If you have no professional photography at all, that is often the quickest win.
  • What is your budget? Photography is generally cheaper to produce than video. If you have a limited budget and have to choose, think about which output will do more work for you across more channels.

If you are a business in Luton, Bedfordshire or the surrounding area and want to talk through what you actually need, we are happy to have that conversation. We will tell you honestly whether photography, video, or a combination makes most sense for where you are.
